Who are Anonymous and why are they fighting alongside Ukraine?

The hacking collective known as Anonymous has declared a cyberwar against Russia in response to its invasion of Ukraine, raising questions about their motives and alignment with Ukraine. Recognizable by their iconic white mask, Anons are members of a decentralized international collective of tech activists and hackers. Anonymous positions itself as an entity that is both everyone and no one, allowing anyone to contribute to hacking efforts under its umbrella.

Notorious for targeting governments, state organizations, tech giants, and major enterprises, Anonymous is often seen as digital vigilantes, taking matters into their own hands when traditional law enforcement falls short. In a video by Vibes, Anonymous is portrayed as a symbol of extrajudicial justice, stepping in where conventional legal systems seem inadequate.

Originating on the 4chan message board in 2003, Anonymous began with small-scale pranks and raids on online platforms. By 2008, they escalated their targets, including the Church of Scientology, and adopted the iconic Guy Fawkes masks as a symbol of rebellion against power abuse.

The collective’s actions have led to arrests worldwide, drawing attention from the FBI and various governments. Notable cyberattacks include targeting PayPal, Visa, Amazon, and Mastercard in 2010, as well as supporting the Arab Spring by attacking government websites during the Tunisian and Egyptian revolutions.

Despite occasional missteps, such as wrongly accusing an individual during the 2014 Missouri protests, Anonymous has gained a reputation as fighters for justice. On February 24th, 2024, the collective officially declared cyberwar against the Russian government in response to the Ukraine invasion.

In their ongoing operations, Anonymous has leaked databases, taken down Russian state websites, and intercepted military communications. While the source and accuracy of these attacks are challenging to verify, experts suggest that they align with Anonymous’s capabilities and previous actions.

As the conflict intensifies, with hackers supporting both Russian and Ukrainian forces, the cyberwar is not just a state-led affair but reflects private interests and personal values. Cyberattacks are increasingly viewed as a tangible part of modern warfare, with experts acknowledging that these digital incidents have real-world consequences.
